TONY Eccles kept the Hartlepool flag flying at the BDO World Darts Championship at the Lakeside.
The 43-year-old, from West View, beat fifth seed Darryl Fitton three sets to one at Frimley Green in Surrey.
It was a right contest throughout but the decisive moment came When Eccles clinched set three against the throw on double seven.
That put him 2-1 up and needing to hold his throw in the fourth set to take victoria.
The Viper won the first leg on double four only for Fitton to level on double 16.
Eccles took out double 16 for leg three but Fitton responded by hitting two 18s to tie it up at two legs pieces.
Fitton looked like taking the fifth leg against the arrows and missed three darts at the double.
But Eccles held his nerve and nailed double right with his third dart for the set and a 3-1 triumph.
The pair had rowed at last year’s tournament over comments Fitton was said to have made after Eccles was defeated by Geert de Vos.
Eccles, known as the Viper, told the Mail “revenge was at stake” at this year’s BDO World Darts Championships.
The win sets up a second round clash with Wesley Harmsm who knocked out Tony’s fellow Poolie Paul Jennings 3-0 on Saturday.
