Hartlepool swimmer Jemma Lowe wins bronze at European Short Course Championship in Herning

JEMMA Lowe has made it an incredible nine medals at short course swimming after winning bronze at the European Championships.

The Hartlepool swimmer finished third in the 200 metres butterfly final on day one of the European Short Course Championship in Denmark.

Spain’s Mireia Belmonte Garcia clinched gold in 2:01.52 while Germany’s Franziska Hentke claimed silver in 2:03.47 with Lowe a second back in the bronze spot in 2:04.51.

Middlesbrough’s Aimee Willmott also lined up in the final for Great Britain and finished in an excellent sixth place with 2:07.33.

It was another stunning effort from Lowe who had missed a chunk of training in the autumn with a back injury.

But Lowe showed her love of the short course events, which are staged in 25-metre pools, with a brilliant swim in Herning.

She qualified third fastest for the final after a good swim in the morning heats and then turned it on in the women’s butterfly showpiece, with only the Spaniard and German getting the better of her.
