JEMMA Lowe has qualified for the semi-finals of the 100m butterfly at the Commonwealth Games after an impressive first swim.
The Hartlepool swimmer began her campaign in Glasgow this afternoon in the third of four heats at the Torcross International Swimming Centre.
Lowe finished the heat in second place (58.61 seconds) behind leading Canadian swimmer Katerine Savard (58.13).
It proved an exciting race, England’s Rachael Kelly leading marginally at the turn from Savard with Lowe third just 0.29 seconds adrift.
However, J Lo, representing Wales, came back strongly to overtake the young English swimmer who clocked 58.67.
Australia’s Olympic bronze medallist Alicia Coutts was the fastest qualifier, finishing the fourth and last heat in 57.93, the only sub 58-second time.
England’s Siobahn O’Connor was second in that heat and third fastest overall in 58.24.
The semis take place in this evening’s session, from 7pm.
