ROSSENDALE 24 WEST HARTLEPOOL 20

ONE point gained or four points dropped?

That will have been a question on the minds of West Hartlepool as they left Manchester on Saturday evening.

West may have claimed a losing bonus point against promotion-chasing Rossendale, but they could have been leaving with a maximum haul.

Kevan Oliphant, Tim Sawyer and Iain Dixon’s side frightened the lives out of National Three North’s second-placed club.

West were left to reflect on two costly incidents towards the end at Sale Sharks’ training HQ in Carrington, just a stone’s throw from Manchester City’s training complex.

The match, moved to Carrington because Rossendale’s Marl Pitts ground was waterlogged, was on a knife-edge, with Rossendale desperately holding on to a four-point lead.

But West were the side in the ascendency, having fought back from 21-0 down to slash the “home” advantage to 24-20.

Alas, West’s hopes would be ruined by two incidents.
