GARETH Foreman went wide with a late penalty as Hartlepool Boys Brigade Old Boys were edged out by Barnard Castle in the Durham Junior Cup final.
Brigade were trailing by one point at Hollow Drift when Barnard Castle were penalised to the left of the posts 25 metres out.
But player-coach Foreman put his kick to the right of the target and Barney comfortably played out the last four minutes to take victory.
Brigade went into the final at Durham City RFC as hot favourites after convincingly beating Barney twice in Durham Northumberland Two this season.
But Barnard Castle produced a brilliant effort, storming into a 10-0 lead in the first 11 minutes.
Skipper Paul Haynes kicked them into the lead with a fifth minute penalty and then converted a stunning try by full-back Alex Finkel who ran 60 metres to score.
Gareth Foreman pulled back three points with a penalty, only for Haynes to respond with a successful kick of his own to make it 13-3.
But BBOB finished the half on top when Jack Fletcher scored an unconverted try in the corner.
And when sub Ian Edwards scored close to the posts in the 51st minute, Gareth Foreman converting, BBOB looked as though they might pull clear.
However, Barney regained the lead in the 69th minute thanks to a third penalty by Haynes.
Gareth Foreman tried his luck from long range shortly afterwards with no success and, sadly for BBOB, was then off target late on from closer in.
