HARTLEPOOL HEAT’s ladies are targeting a season double after clinching the league title with two games to go.

The women beat Nunthorpe 75-58 at Manor College of Technology to maintain their 100 per cent record of 15 wins.

The win ensured they won the Durham County Division One for the second time in three years.

HEAT were Nunthorpe’s nemesis last weekend as they triumphed 93-41 over them on Friday to book themselves a place in the County Cup final, which takes place at Sunderland City Space on Sunday, March 30.

The ladies hope to retain the cup for the third successive year. Coach Sharon Weatherill said: “We’ve had such a fantastic season and it’s not even over yet.

“Last year, except for our cup win, was a bit of a slump but we regrouped this season, injured players returned and our young, talented team stepped up and hit the ground running and haven’t looked back.

“To win the league with two games remaining is an excellent achievement.

“It would be nice to win the County Cup for a third year running.”

HEAT’s men, however, will not be joining the women, U16s and second teams at Cup finals day.

Despite a huge 19 point deficit in the League Cup semis against Houghton – who have pipped them to the Division One title – they relinquished their lead and lost 75-72.

Should the seconds be victorious in the final against Stockton it would be their only silverware this campaign for their 85-83 defeat to Stockton meant their hopes of winning Division Two were ended.

Head coach Anthony Robinson bemoaned the losses, saying: “Words cannot describe how we were all feeling after losing two huge games.

“Both the men’s firsts and seconds were inconsolable after the matches, however that’s the game we play, there are no draws – you win or lose.

“We need to pick ourselves up, win our remaining games and in the case of the seconds, prepare for the final.”

The club would like to invite everyone to come along to support them in the Cup finals day at Sunderland City Space.
