The UK William Hill Festival of Racing returns to Sunderland Greyhound Stadium tonight.

One of the highlights of the greyhound racing calendar is being staged at Sunderland Greyhound Stadium tonight.

The best greyhounds in the United Kingdom and Ireland are scheduled to race it out in The UK William Hill Festival of Racing at the track in Newcastle Road, Sunderland.

The meeting will be screened live on Sky Sports.

All boxes have sold out for the event, though a limited number of tables are available, and the festival - which is one of the most prestigious in the racing calendar - is expected to attract hundreds of greyhound enthusiasts, as well as people looking to have a good time or celebrate a special event.

The trials for the race took place on June 29, with qualifying dogs going on to take part in the heats of the event on July 4.

The semi finals were on July 11, and the grand finals are tonight, with the owner of the winning dog taking home a whopping £25,000 prize.

Local trainer Kelly Macari will be at the event with her previous champion, PinPoint Maxi, who will be hoping to mirror its 2013 success.

Joanne Wilson, assistant operations manager at Sunderland Greyhound Stadium, said: “We are delighted with the number of bookings that the event has brought with it, and we are really looking forward to yet again hosting such an acclaimed event at our venue.

“It’s a real highlight in the sporting calendar.

“We have a fantastic summer ahead at the stadium and are hoping to keep race lovers entertained by providing them with packages that are half the price, but still provide the same great experience.

“The racing isn’t the only thing we have to offer here, and everyone who comes along to any of our race days will see what a great night out we offer.”

The stadium’s summer half-price sale starts next Wednesday, July 22.

For a VIP night out, the venue offers executive boxes at £14.95 per person for parties of 15 or more. The package includes a drinks reception, private suite and a three-course banquet.

The Stadium is also offering three-course meals in its trackside restaurant for £10.95 per person, for parties of four people or more.
