Young golfers come from far and wide for Graeme Storm Junior Open at Hartlepoo Golf Club

The Graeme Storm Junior Open is now in it's third year and Hartlepool's own pro tour star welcomed over 125 young golfers from as far as the home counties to Scotland to a beautifully prepared Hartlepool golf course bathed in sunshine.

Graeme, now 40 and an honorary member of the club, started his career over the same links course as a teenager and as we all know has gone on to great success through both the amateur ranks and as a multiple winner in the company of some of the greats of the game.

With age groups now separated into two sections, the young players have a chance to shine in their age categories in both girls and boys groups.

With Graeme patrolling the course in a buggy, following surgery for a wrist injury, he was on hand to appreciate the young talented players assembled from across the UK.

Graeme said: “I went out in the buggy, the kids did great, there was some fantastic golf from what I saw and the kids were loving it.

“There were some great players out there, you could see that just by standing along the first tee.”

This year the Junior Open, in association with Dyke House College where Graeme is a golf consultant, doubled up as a qualifier for both the Telegraph Junior Golf Championship and the North of England Under-14s Championship.

Freddie McKenna shot a 73 to win the 11-14 boys gross competition and Libby Bell returned a 76 to win in the girls age group.

In the senior category, the 15-18s, there was success for Charlotte Pickering after her 77 and Alex Buchanan claimed the boys’ title.

Hartlepool’s Ben Suggitt provided the local supporters with a great win in the boy’s 15-18 net score group with a wonderful 59.

Another excellent year for this increasingly popular event, with the Mini Storm completion for the younger players still to come on Saturday, May 19 at The Wynyard Club.

Graeme concluded by saying: “We don’t want to take everything for granted though, we want to make sure this continues to get better and we are looking at ways to move it forward.

“I would like to say thanks to my wife Sara because without her this event wouldn’t run like it does. I am away all the time. She does all the organising, the prep, writing the emails, deals with the flak, I don’t know how shedoes it.”
