ALBUM REVIEW: Bill Fay - Who Is The Sender?

BILL FAY ... Who Is The Sender? (Dead Oceans)
BILL FAY ... Who Is The Sender? (Dead Oceans)

AT 72, Bill Fay’s second coming surely ranks among the most remarkable revivals of recent years, with 2012’s Life is People reigniting interest in an artist many assumed lost among the phalanx of ‘70s folk obscurities.

Considering it was his first in four decades, the record’s quality was nothing short of staggering, and with a little help from a small but influential band of converts (Nick Cave. Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy) winded up striking a chord with a whole new band of listeners.

Another notable fan, Spiritualized’s Jason Pierce, meanwhile, even makes a guest appearance on this follow-up, which sticks largely within the same themes of consternation and spirituality.

Indeed, it seems the older Fay gets, the more weary and withdrawn his worldview becomes; and while Who is the Sender? can’t quite match the wonderment of its predecessor, it’s muted sound is one which suits him to the ground. 7/10. AW
