THE concept of the ‘long-player’ is open to interpretation, though at 21 minutes, you feel gimmicky-named Cardiff quintet Joanna Gruesome push it to the lower limit with Peanut Butter.
Thankfully, the quintet’s follow-up to their Welsh Music Prize-winning debut packs a lot into that brisk run-time, loading it with songs which bypass build and subtlety and instead cut straight to the hooks.
And that clustered make-up does nothing to harm their potency, with Alanna McArdle’s sugar-sweet voice providing a perfect pop outlet amid the band’s noisy indie-punk bursts.
A brief but bright ray of sunshine, and one which crams in your money’s worth. 7/10. AW
