ALBUM REVIEW: Kodaline - Coming Up For Air

THIS Irish quartet are the type of bland-yet-successful group critics love to pillage, with backhanded comparisons to Coldplay rife even before their debut, Perfect World, went multi-platinum.

Barbs such as these are harsh.

Granted, Coming Up For Air’s processed folk-rock hardly makes for a thrilling listening, and its lyrics tend to be cringeworthy and cliche-riddled (The One in particular is horrid).

But they are, by and large, at least propped up by ample melodies.

Instead, the chief issue here is the album’s length, with its 16 cuts seemingly lasting far longer than their actual 64-minute runtime.

It’s passable enough until you take an impatient glance at the tracklist - then recoil in horror once it turns out you’re barely a quarter of the way through. 5/10. AW
