THE biggest boyband on the planet showed negative pubicity clearly hadn’t affected them after a thrilling show at the Stadium of Light..

On the morning of their tour launch, One Direction woke up to headlines splashed across the newspapers which suggested they may not have been as clean-cut as their managers make out.

But neither the Fab Five or more than 50,000 of their adoring fans were bothered about as they rocked the home of Sunderland AFC in one of the biggest gigs the region has ever staged.

Fans, many of whom had started queuing in the early hours yesterday to get as close to their idols as possible, screamed, danced and sang along from the moment Harry, Liam, Zayn, Louis and Niall made their way onto the stage just after 8pm.

Midnight Memories, What Makes You Beautiful and Live While We’re Young almost raised the roof, while One Way Or Another and Story of My Life had the crowd singing along.

It wasn’t just the young girls who enjoyed seeing their heart-throbs in the flesh, as there were plenty of admiring glances from some of the mums who had gone along for the ride.

Nicola Kenny, 36, from the Headland, Hartlepool, made the trip to the stadium with her son Zac Lines, three. She said: “They were absolutely fantastic. Well worth the money and braving the rain.

“They really interacted with the crowd well and it was a real family atmosphere and the rain didn’t seem to bother any of the screaming young girls! It was great to see.”

Little Megan Willis, seven, a pupil at West Park Primary School, said: “Harry is my favourite. They were fab, 10 out of 10. I’m a bigger fan than ever.”

At one point in the show, the wet weather got the better of Harry Styles, who skidded across the stage on his back - much to the delight of the rest of the band and the crowd.

Niall tried a belly slide - biut also entertained the adoring audience with his attempts at the mackem accent.

Best Song Ever ended what was an amazing performance and the crowd went home thrilled.
