Singing hopeful Josh Daniel made emotions run high as he sailed through to the next round of the X Factor.
The 21-year-old, from Billingham, appeared on the hit ITV talent show last night, picking up a resounding ‘yes’ vote from all of the judges, reducing them to tears in the process.
The car mechanic took to the stage to give an emotional rendition of Labrinth’s Jealous.
He told the judges: “It means a lot to me for a different reason, I think, to how Labrinth wrote it.”
Music mogul Simon Cowell asked him to explain why, and Josh said: “I lost my best friend a couple of years ago and I kind of interpret the lyrics in a completely different way.”
Josh’s friend Thomas Woolley passed away in 2013, just a year after accompanying Josh to his first audition for the show.
Opening his heart on the show, viewers heard him talk about the tragedy.
He said: “I lost my best friend two years ago, he was only 18 at the time and we were really, really close. We did everything together.”
His mum also appeared on the show. She said: “We got a call saying we had to go to the hospital because he wasn’t going to last the day, and I know that was tough on Josh.”
Josh added: “The lyrics kind of say I’m jealous that you’re happy without me and I kind of see it in the sense that I’m jealous that he’s now happy in heaven and that he’s moved on to a better place and that I can’t be with him.”
Josh stunned the crowd with his emotional performance, bringing tears to the eyes of judges Nick Grimshaw, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Simon.
The audience rose in a standing ovation as Josh finished his performance.
Cheryl broke down in tears as she said: “That was the most captivated I’ve been in all my auditions so far.”
She apologised, saying: “Excuse me, I’m sorry, I’m very emotional. You really touched me. I believed every word you sang. I kind of want to hug you.”
Josh said: “I’ll have a hug. I’ll accept a hug.” And Cheryl got up from her chair to hug Josh, saying in his ear, “I’m sorry for whatever it is you went through.”
Nick said: “Josh, that really got me right in the heart. I was completely transfixed, I didn’t want it to end.”
An emotional Simon whispered to Cheryl, “Let’s go to a vote”, before they all gave him a ‘yes’, sending him through to the bootcamp stage of the contest.
Josh, who auditioned in Manchester, ran off the stage and into his mum’s arms as she told him how proud she was and how proud his friend Tom would be.
Josh’s audition also got attention from Labrinth, who tweeted him to say: “brilliant moment on @TheXFactor I’m glad that the song has as much meaning for you as it has for me... Lol you made Simon cry!”
