FUNNY man John Bishop is heading to Sunderland next month for a one-off show.

The comic has hand-picked the Sunderland Empire as one of only a selected group of venues he will play this year.

Last year was a busy year for the award-winning comedian who completed his biggest tour to date at the country’s top arenas.

But next month’s gig at the Empire, which takes place on June 20, promises to be a more intimate affair and looks set to be his only North East date. The only other two venues confirmed for this pop-up tour so far are Leeds and Isle of Man.

Hailed as one of the country’s most popular comics, John Bishop is also well known for his TV appearances on shows including John Bishop’s Big Year, A League of their Own, Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Road Show and Have I got News For You.

Empire general manager Ben Phillips said: “We’re absolutely delighted that John Bishop, very much a prominent figure on today’s comedy circuit, has chosen us specifically to be a part of his very selective 2013 tour.

“Since his sell-out date here back in 2010 John’s career has gone from strength to strength and we look forward to welcoming him back to the venue for what will undoubtedly be another fantastic show.”
