CORONATION Street fans are in for a treat when a star of the soap comes to town for the Christmas lights switch-on.

Jack P Shepherd, who plays David Platt in the long-running soap, will be in town for the event on Wednesday, December 3, in Church Square, from 4pm to 7pm, all with a theme of Mary Poppins.

There will be songs from the famous family musical as well as Christmas crafts inside the art gallery.

Other highlights include carol singing and dancing with chimney sweeps in true Mary Poppins style.

Christmas tales will be told in story corner and there’s a chance to try out hand-knitting.

One of the highlights will be the Giant Sweetie Lantern Procession to Church Square with the children from St Josephs RC Primary School. The procession leaves the school at 4pm.

Last year, X Factor finalist Abi Alton lit up Church Square when she turned on the lights with Hartlepool Borough Council ceremonial mayor Councillor Stephen Akers-Belcher, before she performed a rendition of Whitney Houston’s I Wanna Dance With Somebody.

Around 1,000 people flocked to the council-organised Christmas extravaganza which was the first switch-on ceremony in Hartlepool for a number of years.
