She was met by a crowd of her young fans at the Town Hall Theatre, in Raby Road, where schoolchildren were invited to hear her speak and get their hands on a signed copy of the author’s latest release.

Cathy, who is one of the UK’s top-selling children’s authors, talked to pupils from six of the town’s primary schools about her work and handed out inspiration for their own reading and writing.

Heather Bellwood, Hartlepool Council’s children’s and outreach librarian, said: “It was a fantastic event. Cathy loves coming to Hartlepool and to the atmospheric venue of the Town Hall Theatre and she was delighted by the very warm welcome she received from the children.

“It was clear that the youngsters really enjoyed the event and got a lot out of it as they asked Cathy plenty of very good questions. We have also received lots of praise for the event from the children’s schools.”

She was an art teacher, a magazine editor and an agony aunt before becoming a full-time writer and previously worked for Shout and Jackie magazines.

Her books have sold more than two million copies and are much loved by girls aged nine to 12.

Broken Heart Club is about a group of girls, aged 11 to 13, who are grieving for the loss of their friend.
