Drivers have been urged to take extra care this morning, with warnings of ice on the region's roads.

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of ice from Yorkshire to Northumberland, with wintry showers overnight leading to some ice, primarily on untreated surfaces but perhaps also where grit has been washed off by frequent showers.

There is also a chance of snow on the hills, which could produce slushy conditions even at lower levels.

A cold northwesterly airstream will bring heavy showers or rain, sleet, snow and hail until later this morning, while clear spells in between will allow temperatures to fall close to or below freezing, increasing the likelihood of some ice.
