Academy event helps students explore career choices

Catcote Academy was bustling for the careers event.

Around 30 employers, colleges and training providers took part in a careers event at Catcote Academy.

Students enthusiastically spoke to the visitors while the school also promoted its vocational courses and parents and carers picked up helpful advice.

Catcote Academy holds the Choices event once a year in addition to many other initiatives to get students to think about their futures.

Careers advisor Jackie McGarry said: “Everyone we invited turned up and it was really successful. A lot of parents and carers attended.

“I think it is really important to offer that impartial advice and guidance to show what is out there for our students.

“Events like this are really useful for that as we get everyone together and parents can come as well.”

Among the providers showcasing their opportunities were Hartlepool firm J&B recycling, IT firm Agile, of Stockton, and colleges from across Tees Valley, including East Durham College in Peterlee.

Outside agencies including West View Advice and Resource Centre also offered advice and information to support and advise parents and carers on issues such as benefits and transitional support.

The event also served to promote further education and training programmes for students aged 16 to 19 in Catcote Academy in horticulture, catering, hospitality, childcare and business & enterprise.

Refreshments were provided during the afternoon by Catcote Academy’s own catering department.
