FIREFIGHTERS were called to extinguish a blaze in the engine compartment of a car.

A black Vauxhall Omega was travelling in Elizabeth Way in Seaton Carew, Hartlepool, when flames ignited in the engine compartment.

The owner of the car called 999 and a fire engine from Stranton fire station was sent to the scene at around 12.10pm on Sunday.

Crews used a water jet to soak the engine to extinguish the fire.

It was put out by 12.46pm, leaving the car’s dashboard and engine compartment with fire damage.

A spokesman for Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “We were called at 12.12pm to a car fire in Elizabeth Way.

“One fire appliance from Stranton fire station attended.

“The fire was under control at 12.46pm.”

“There was fire damage to the dashboard and the engine compartment.

“The owner of the car was with the vehicle at the time of the blaze.”
