The first Walk for Women takes place alongside the popular male-only Miles for Men 5km fun runs on Sunday, July 31.

After searching for a sponsor to provide essential financial backing, the organisers were delighted when Hartlepool United came on board.

Club chief executive Russ Green said the sponsorship is part of the club – and new chairman Gary Coxall’s – commitment to local causes.

Russ said: “Miles for Men were looking to get this off the ground and I think they approached quite a few people without success.

“When our new chairman came in he was very conscious of local charities and events and wanted to work with Miles for Men.

“It also fits in with the club’s motto ‘the town’s club’ where we are doing a lot more to promote charities within the town.

“I think this will be a good kick-start for them and get the event going.”

Walk for Women will raise money for Hartlepool & District Hospice and the work of Miles for Men which helps many people affected by cancer.

Michael Day, founder of Miles for Men, said: “It is great for the charity to have the support of the local football club.

“It will go towards helping support local families and other people that need our help.”
