THE widow of a late cartoonist will unveil the statue of cheeky chap Andy Capp later this week.
Jean Smythe, the wife of Andy Capp's creator Reg Smythe, will do the honours at the official unmasking of the bronze cast of the Hartlepool icon on Thursday.
The £20,000 sculpture will take pride of place outside The Harbour of Refuge pub, in Croft
Terrace, on the Headland.
And it is hoped it will bring tourism to the area, by attracting Andy Capp fans from all over the world.
The date the 5ft 8in statue of the loveable rogue was to arrive in the town was being kept a secret by the North Hartlepool Partnership Board, as previously reported by the Mail.
But members revealed the date today and hoped fans of the character would turn out to catch their first glimpse of him.
Board chairman, Councillor John Marshall, said all members of the group are hoping the statue will be a hit.
Coun Marshall added: "We're all very excited about the unveiling of Andy Capp.
"It's going to be a very memorable and historic moment for the town, and the people of the town.
"The board did this for the good of the area and every single one of us wants it to be a success."
The sculpture will be unveiled at 11am, following refreshments in the Harbour of Refuge pub from 10am.
For further details contact Coun Marshall or Pauline Gooding at the North Hartlepool Partnership office on (01429) 288041 or email john.ford@hartlepool.gov.uk
