Hartlepool United’s squad returned to pre-season training today.

And manager Ronnie Moore is planning a rousing speech in a bid to inspire them not to repeat last year’s horror show.

Moore is desperate to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past two seasons, which has twice seen Pools go dangerously close to dropping out of the Football League.

The 62-year-old took charge in December and led the side to safety and insists he is only looking up from now on.

And he has called on his new-look Pools squad to “bottle” the euphoria of the final two weeks of last season, as the club pulled off what seemed an unlikely survival.

Moore told SportMail: “The talk with the players will come at the start of pre-season when we have the new blood in.

“We will fire into the group what we want to achieve because what we don’t want is what we have had for the last two seasons, certainly not like what we had last season.

“That is down to myself and Sam [Collins] in organising and getting the best out of them.

“I hope the players can bottle it and make the most if it, especially those younger players who want to be around the club this season.

“That’s what it’s like – not to be in a position we were in – but to be in a position like Wycombe were.

“That is what we want to be aiming for.”

Wycombe narrowly avoided relegation themselves in 2013-14 before pushing for automatic promotion all of last season only to fall at the final hurdle, eventually losing on penalties to Southend United in the League Two play-off final.

In order to push Pools further up the table Moore has made seven summer signings so far, with two wingers and a reserve keeper next on the shopping list.

He knows he may not get all of his remaining targets though.

Moore added: “There will be some disappointments but there will also be some that you think you won’t get that you do get.

“Whatever we get we have to mould them into a side that is hard to beat.”

It will be the first time new signings Carl Magnay and Harry Worley will meet their new team-mates.
