Business is booming for novelty cake maker Josh Newton who is also known as the Cake King.

It seems that there is nothing that he can’t turn into a personalised work of art in cake form.

Josh, 24, has made cakes in the shape of lifelike dogs, a stag’s head, Xbox games console, Rubix Cube, cars, a McDonald's meal, and jar of chocolate spread.

He has ran the business from The Arches, in Park Road, Hartlepool, since 2018, but trade has grown this year as customers shout about his handiwork and share pictures on social media.

Josh said: “It’s getting busier. I am fully booked for this month and August.

"I’m looking at taking on apprentices because of how busy I am getting."

Amazingly, Josh is self taught and makes everything himself from scratch with a bit of admin help from his wife Julie.

He can make up to ten cakes a week but some of the more complicated designs can take him up to a week.

One of his favourites and most detailed to make was an edible throne from TV’s Game of Thrones featuring over 80 individually made swords.

Josh added: “I like doing the unusual ones that other people don’t think to do or something that's not been done before.

"I can do pretty much whatever people ask for. I like doing ones in the shape of cars and animals but want to get into the more extreme, bigger cakes you see.

"People cry when they see them which is what you want.

"A lot of the time people think they're models and actually don’t realise that they are cake.

"Then they don’t want to cut them and eat them.”

As well as birthday and wedding cakes, he also makes novelty cupcakes and has designed some ready for Halloween complete with gory lifelike edible severed fingers on top.

Josh started the business from home when he was just 18 after toying with being a teacher, product designer and personal trainer.
