Hornsey’s in Coronation Drive, Seaton Carew, opened for business on Sunday May 24. The hatch service was strictly takeaway only, with nothing being consumed on the premises. No customers were allowed inside.
Two-metre markings and arrows were in place. Staff, including security staff, wore face masks, and customers were seen enjoying a drink in the sunshine, with a limit of two alcoholic drinks per person, served with a lid.

Customers from Hartlepool and not-too-far beyond also seemed happy with how things had been organised by Hornsey’s, as well as the adjoining Surfside fish and chip shop and the Beachview coffee bar, who were also takeaway only.
Craig Arnott from The Fens said: “I sometimes come here for a walk. We heard it was open and said we’d go down there with the dog. It’s great. This is their first day open.
“At the end of the day, you’ve got to go to the supermarket. So why not? It’s unlikely you’ll catch anything outdoors, if you believe what you read. It’s a little bit of normality again.”

Steve said: “We’re just out for a walk, we’ve been along to the marina. We saw this and just thought we’d have a drink while we’re here. It’s well organised.”

Mark Bailey and Maria O’Connor also took the opportunity to relax, although Mark was on soft drinks.
