The budget airline has launched the first ‘buy one, get one free’ offer in Ryanair’s 35-year history in an attempt to boost flagging passenger numbers .

Customers who book a flight before midnight today (Thursday, September 24) for travel up to December 14 on selected routes will get a second ticket at no extra charge.

Flights available from Newcastle Airport include trips to Alicante, Malaga, Palma and Faro – although not all flights to these destinations are included in the offer.

The 24-hour sale comes days after the airline announced it will further reduce its operations due to coronavirus travel restrictions.

Its capacity in October will be 40% of 2019 levels, compared with the 50% it previously announced.

Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary said demand for future bookings is “terrible”.

He told Sky News: “Into November and December our forward bookings are running at around 10%, that’s about a quarter of where they would normally be at this time of the year.

“We can’t rule out job losses but in Ryanair we’re certainly desperately working with our people to prevent them.”

Ryanair’s offer is only available on selected flights between September 25 and December 14 and only applies to the airline’s ‘value’ tickets.

Passengers returning from countries such as Spain, France, Portugal and the Netherlands will all have to self-isolate on their return to the UK.
