Children and their parents can watch Father Christmas and his elves busily wrapping gifts in the grotto that has been created by businessman Ian Griffiths at The Printers in Murray Street.

It is bringing some welcome happiness following the difficulties caused by this year’s coronavirus pandemic.

Ian said: “Months ago I saw that Christmas wasn’t going to be the same so I thought ‘let’s put something on to put a smile on the kids’ faces’.

"The original idea was for people to walk past the window and see Santa. Then the government changed the rules so that grottos could open again and made some quick changes.”

The festive workshop was opened by Hartlepool youngster Harry Fletcher, aged nine, who shop supported during his recent poppy fundraising efforts which raised over £5,000.

Now every afternoon until Christmas Eve from 3pm-7pm families can pay a visit one at a time for free to watch, sit in Santa’s chair and sleigh and tell him their Christmas wish.

And there is lots to keep Santa and his elves busy as they wrap gifts donated to various town gift appeals and includes a ‘magic’ wrapping machine.

It is also helping several local good causes as donations from visitors are being accepted in aid of Alice House Hospice, Harbour Women’s Refuge, Hartlepool Ambulance Charity and Minds for Men/Wellness for Women.

Ian added: "We have a speaker and microphone if people wish to stay outside and are also doing live streams on Facebook and YouTube.

"We are also trying to give it an international feel and will have several Santas from Bangladesh, Hungary, Poland and America making an appearance.

“The reaction so far is every single person has loved it and the kids are amazed by it. And they absolutely love the magic wrapping machine.”

The business has been given a number of selection boxes from generous sweet makers Nestle to give to children.

But the grotto would welcome more to make sure no child goes away empty handed.

The Printers has been kept busy throughout the pandemic including work for voluntary services and being involved in the supply of PPE.
