How much this prominent Hartlepool hotel with roof top bar is up for sale

A for sale sign has gone up on The Hillcarter Hotel in Church Street and is being marketed online by commercial property consultancy Sanderson Weatherall.

It is seeking offers in the region of £325,000 for their clients’ freehold interest for the 21,437 square feet hotel with roof top bar.

Sanderson Weatherall's website states: "The property consists of 2 interconnected buildings.

"The main hotel building, built in 1887, contains 26 en-suite rooms, reception, basement night club, ground floor sports bar, functions suite, kitchen facilities and a roof top bar with panoramic views.

"The connected building with a painted white render has a ground floor bar and 1st floor space that was being renovated.”

The website adds: “The property is located on the corner of Church Street and Whitby Street, an area undergoing significant transformation following funding from the Tees Valley Combined Authority with aims of revitalising the area to develop a thriving creative industries quarter based around Cleveland College of Art and Design’s new campus.”

The Hillcarter has been closed for just over a year after apparent legal notices were posted on the building in June last year.

It has remained boarded up since then.

They included a High Court Writ of Possession notice and a Notice of Obligation to Collect Goods said to be for or on behalf of Secure Capital SA, a Luxembourg-based mortgage company.

The Hillcarter began life as a department store in the late 1800s named after two businessmen.

The Hartlepool History Then and Now website states it became Blackett’s department store sometime during the Second World War until 1970 when it closed.

It then served as the discount Dovecot Salerooms in the 1970s and 1980s and reopened as a hotel and bar with its original name in 1997 following an extensive refurbishment.

In 2014, the then new owner announced a £250,000 refurbishment including six new en-suite bedrooms and a new sports lounge in the adjoining former Nexus bar.

In June 2017, Hartlepool Borough Council wrote off £114,363 in unpaid business taxes owed for the period covering April 2012 to December 2016.
