In July 2021 the UK Government set out a 10-year strategy Life Sciences Vision “Build Back Better: Our vision for growth” for the sector to solve some of the biggest healthcare problems of our generation.

The strategy mentions how the North has some of the biggest potential in growth in manufacturing which will “support the creation and retention of jobs in the North” within the Life Sciences sector.

North East England is now one of the UK’s hotspots for Life Sciences and plans to double the health and life sciences sector by 2030.

The conference, held in partnership with the Academic Health Science Network for the North East and North Cumbria, will bring together key people in industry, academia and public sector to talk about putting the North East's life sciences sector on the map.

Other conference partners include CPI, who help companies to develop, prove, prototype and commercialise next generation products and processes; Marks & Clerk LLP, a leading patent and trademark attorney global firm; and BioPartner UK, an accredited trade organisation that provides practical support and international promotion to UK Life Sciences companies.

Steve Bagshaw from the UK Vaccines taskforce will join the speaker lineup in September, discussing some of the key lessons coming out of covid and how the central role the North East’s health and life sciences community played in the UK’s COVID-19 response.

The conference will emphasise the need to enshrine the engagement between industry, Government, NHS and academia as a cornerstone for future working. The agenda will look at key issues within the sector including digital processes, sustainable working for a greener future and a pipeline of relevant skills for the growth of all areas of the life sciences industry.

To close the conference, delegates will hear about the importance of innovation and scaling businesses across NE in achieving the 2030 target, showcasing some of the best SMEs and start up companies in the region who are prioritising the key themes and areas of expertise mentioned throughout the conference day.
