The pub chain Wetherspoon has revealed that it will cut around 130 positions from its head office, including those in regional roles.

The company has claimed that a downturn in the restaurant and pub sector, along with the company slowing it’s rate of expansion, are the reasons that jobs are under threat.

Bosses have confirmed that between 110 and 130 positions are at risk and that all 417 head office employees, including those based in regional roles, have been contacted about the plans.

Wetherspoon’s chief executive John Hutson has said that firm decisions had not yet been made and that the company is keen to avoid compulsory redundancies.

Mr Hutson commented: “The decision is mainly a result of a downturn in trade in the pub and restaurant industry generally, a reduction in the company’s rate of expansion and a reduction in the number of pubs operated from 955 in 2015 to 873 today.

“We should emphasise that no firm decisions have been made at this stage.

“The company will listen to suggestions from staff to help avoid or reduce the number of compulsory redundancies which are required.

“Wetherspoon is proposing to collectively consult with employees through an employment representative committee, which will be established for this purpose.”

Bosses also confirmed that affected staff might be able to transfer to a pub-based role should a suitable position be available.

Those who currently work in the company’s pub sector will not be affected by the announcement and it is unclear if anyone is at risk in the North East.
