Your Hartlepool Mail needs your support so we can keep on investing in local news

The Mail. YOUR Mail. It’s been at the very heart of life in Hartlepool for more than 140 years. Since 1877, it has delivered the news to generations of Hartlepudlians and given them a voice. Today it needs your support.

I started as a junior reporter on the Hartlepool Mail 14 years ago and I’ve witnessed the growth of hartlepoolmail.co.uk first hand while covering everything from crime to boxing. It is, no doubt, the most popular news website in our great town - and by some distance.

Hartlepool has given me so many great memories, from seeing the Tall Ships sail in off the North Sea to Pools beating Darlo 3-0 in their own backyard. Do you remember the bloke in a canoe who attracted the world’s attention? There’s never a dull moment. It’s also where I started a family and made friends for life.

I’ve worked with men and women who are incredibly passionate about this town. None more so than Richard Mennear, who now leads our football coverage, and Mark Payne, who is always seeking out the biggest story of the day. You’ll also see Frank Reid snapping away at every event, while Chris Cordner is always ready to take you for a walk down memory lane. It’s a team of passionate people serving passionate people.

That brings me to my favourite thing about the town: You, the readers. Hartlepudlians are a proud bunch and call a spade a spade. That’s why I’m going to be really frank with you. We need you. We need you to support us so we can keep funding great journalism in the town, whether it be covering what’s happening on the pitch at the Vic, in the council chambers or in the region’s crown court. We bring you the good and the bad.

Yes, there will be a cost. But we also hope you will agree there is a value. Our new subscription service will not only keep you in the know but it will make your online experience easier. There’ll be fewer advertisements and you’ll also get our newsletters that keep you up-to-date on town life.

At a time when social media is awash with rumour and inaccuracy, it has never been more important to have a trusted and regulated voice like ours covering the town. To keep holding authorities to account. To keep YOUR voice heard.

It will be your financial support that helps us to continue to focus on what matters to YOU.

Thank you

Mark Thompson, Acting Editor
