Former Middlesbrough FC players to deliver new football academy launching in Hartlepool

Football-mad people job seekers can improve their skills on the pitch and life skills off it with a new academy coming to Hartlepool next week.

Town training consultancy Orangebox Training Solutions has teamed up with Premier Player Football Academy to deliver a new six-week course combining on the pitch coaching tips with classroom based activities to develop football related and career boosting personal skills.

The Orangebox Football Academy has been developed by former Middlesbrough goalkeeper Andy Collett and begins at Hartlepool Sixth Form College on Monday, April 26.

There are still some places available and it is open to anyone aged 16 or over who is unemployed.

Glen Hughes, Orangebox design and marketing manager, said: “It is a pathway to gaining qualifications in a fun and engaging way which will allow those on the course to move into employment or enhance their movement into football.”

Andy, who is an A Licence goalkeeping coach and UEFA B outfield coach, made over 230 professional appearances including in the Premier League.

He will be supported by former Middlesbrough midfielder Phil Stamp, who played in the same teams as players such as Juninho and Emerson, and is how head coach at Premier Player.

Andy said: “We are aware that an increased number of our youngsters leave school with no qualification and we see this Academy as a way to develop life skills and help them towards gaining qualifications.”

Skills on the field participants will include tips on finishing, passing, possession and more.

While classroom based activities will not only provide an insight to the life of a professional footballer but also provide the skills and knowledge needed to embark on a career with careers advice input.

Learners will connect to the Football Association and complete online courses in areas such as safeguarding, respect for coaches, equality and diversity.

Guest speakers will include former professional players, referees, coaches and journalists.

Simon Corbett, CEO of Orangebox Training, said: “This is a really exciting project for everyone.

“We will be offering additional training opportunities for youngsters in the community.

“Andy and I will be providing a safe environment for your youngsters to develop their existing skills and to help them learn new ones and signpost to careers opportunities.”
