Hartlepool school’s red letter day with a card from Boris Johnson

The thank you card from Boris Johnson to Springwell School.

Thoughtful pupils at Springwell School made a get well soon card for the Prime Minister when he was seriously ill in hospital with coronavirus.

The card was in the form of a 3D love heart and was one of a number children still attending school made for the local community.

And it certainly cheered the Prime Minister up who sent the school a picture of him holding their card along with a personal reply.

Inside the PM’s card, he said: “Thank you so much for the wonderful message and good wishes you sent me when I was unwell.

“The letters and cards I received really cheered me up. As you may have heard I’m back in 10 Downing Street now and feeling much better.

“Thank you also to you and your family for all you are doing to keep yourselves and others safe.”

Cheryl Decosemo, a speech therapy assistant at Springwell School, who oversaw the making of the cards, said they did not expect to get a reply when they posted it.

Springwell school pupil Joseph Burgon who has been attending school throughout the pandemic and helped make the get well soon card.

She said: “When we were making cards for the local residents and the hospital Boris was in the news a lot.

“A little girl, who ended up writing inside the card, send why don’t we send Boris a card, so we said we’ll do one for him.

“We posted it and didn’t expect anything more of it till we saw he had received all these cards.

“The children were so excited when they got the letter from him, they couldn’t believe it.”

Springwell, who cater for children with special education needs and disabilities, also delivered similar cards to near neighbours that support them and to the University Hospital of Hartlepool.

Boris Johnson spent three nights in intensive care in April after suffering from the effects of Covid-19 for about two weeks.

He later said the NHS saved his life “no question” by not leaving his side.
