Creative students from Catcote Academy in Hartlepool helped a care home celebrate VE Day in style.

Youngsters got busy producing stacks of flags, bunting and activities which were delivered to residents of Lindisfarne Care Home in time for their party on May 8.

They have been unable to visit the home for work placements but still wanted to support the home during lockdown.

Students learned about the importance of VE Day in the run up to the 75th anniversary.

Lindisfarne manager Beryl Anderson said: “It’s so important for both the residents and students to maintain their contact and relationships during this time.

“The decorations definitely brightened up the party.”

The students, last year’s winners of the national Diversity and Inclusion award for Initiative of the Year, also created a quiz for the party.

They are also pen pals with some of the residents to try to keep spirits up on both sides and practice their literacy skills.
