Sporting success for Easington primary pupils

Easington Village C of E Primary School, in Hall Walks, has been presented with the Sainsbury’s School Games School Mark Gold Award.

This accolade is for the school’s commitment to PE and competitive sport.

School PE co-ordinator John Robertson said: “This is no mean feat for a school of our small size.”

The award was given for sport both in school and at after-school clubs and also recognises the school’s policy of ensuring that pupils get at least two hours of PE a week.

Some children are also given extra PE lessons, meaning they take part in five hours of sessions.

Mr Robertson, who runs after-school running, gymnastics and football clubs, said: “It’s a Government initiative and schools have to take part in a certain number of games a year.”

He said the school had just came second in Easington district netball finals, and it had previously won cross-country and tennis competitions.

Former pupils Jack Hutchinson and Lennon Yates, who left the school last year and now attend Easington Academy, won a gold award in the national Quad Kids competition for running, jumping, throwing and sprinting, which led to a national award for achievement in PE.

Mr Robertson added: “We try to provide an ethos of sports and PE enjoyment.

“I am very proud of the school, it takes a lot of effort and staff and pupils have worked hard, fully backed by our headteacher Andrea Swift.”
