Talented Hartlepool student features in BBC's Growing Up Gifted series for final time

Sixteen-year-old Kian Milburn was one of six teenagers from all over the country featured in the BBC series Growing Up Gifted.

It has followed promising pupils and the challenges they face by coming from lower income families.

The final episode featuring the boys aired on BBC Two at 9pm on Wednesday, March 25.

It follows Kian through his final year at High Tunstall College of Science and his dreams of becoming a theoretical physicist.

The episode culminates with the three boys getting their GCSE results.

In it Kian says: “Year 11 is an important year for me because I want to be a theoretical physicist.

“There’s nothing really that can’t be explained by maths and science.”

The programme follows Kian from his mock exams to exploring his options for how he could achieve his dream career and visits East Durham College in Peterlee.

But to go there he needs to get a grade 6, equivalent to the old B, to study there.

Kian, of the Headland, also talks about his reservations of leaving Hartlepool to pursue his love of physics as it would mean leaving his parents and sister.

Kian’s potential was highlighted when he first started at High Tunstall. But money at home is tight as his dad Gary is a full-time carer for Kian’s mum Angela.

Gary has also featured strongly throughout the series encouraging Kian to achieve his potential.

Kian last year told the Mail about volunteering to appear on TV: "I put myself forward for it because I was bored and just thought 'why not?'

"For a while it was sort of annoying, but I got used to it as time goes on."

There are bumps away as Kian did not do as well in his mock exams as expected.
