This is when primary schools in Hartlepool are set to reopen for new term

Most Hartlepool primary schools have reopened for the start of the new term but some have remained closed due to safety concerns around coronavirus.

Hartlepool Borough Council said on Sunday (January 3) that primaries across Hartlepool were expected to open as planned from Monday, January 4, based on public health advice.​

It comes after Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he had "no doubt" that schools are safe and parents should send primary-age children back to classrooms.

But a number of town schools have stayed closed for two more weeks and switched to online learning with staff backing teaching unions and concerned at the large increases of the virus.

Here is the situation for Hartlepool’s primaries as of Monday, January 4.

Barnard Grove – Open

Brougham – Open

Clavering – Open Tuesday, January 5, except for nursery and classes 1KS and RAO which are open only to key worker and vulnerable children

Eldon Academy – According to the school’s website it is due to reopen on Tuesday, January 5

Eskdale Academy – Closed provisionally until Monday, January 18. Head Elizabeth Killeen said on its website: “I cannot apologise enough for the short notice for this; however the stance of the Teaching unions as well as the advice from SAGE and huge increase in society transmission over the last 3-4 days has made this the only decision available to me.

"I have to make the right call to keep all children, their families and staff safe.”

However, the school will still be open for children of key workers and vulnerable children from Tuesday, January 5.

Holy Trinity – Closed except for vulnerable children and those of critical workers. In a letter to parents head Amanda Baines said: “This afternoon [Sunday] I have received letters from a number of teaching and support staff informing me that due to the current Tier 4 restrictions, the high and rising rates of infection in Hartlepool, that they do not feel it is safe or appropriate for them to teach whole classes of children within our school.”

Jesmond Gardens – Closed until Monday, January 18

Kingsley – Open

Lynnfield – Open

Rift House – Open

Rossmere – Open

Springwell – Open

St Aidan’s – Closed except to critical workers’ children and those classed as vulnerable. Aims to reopen by January 18.

St Bega’s – Open except reception due to staff shortages until Tuesday, January 12.

St Cuthbert’s RC – Partially open. Remote learning for nursery, Reception, Years 2, 3/4 and 4 while all other years and all key worker children in any year group expected in school as usual.

St Helen’s – Open

St Peter’s Elwick – Open from Tuesday, January 5

St Teresa’s – Open

St John Vianney – Daycare and Holiday Care reopen on Monday, January 4, and school reopens on Thursday, January 7.

St Joseph’s – Closed except to vulnerable and critical worker children until further notice from Tuesday, January 5.
