Caring Hartlepool student joins volunteer army of key workers fighting Covid-19

Annie Hamilton, who is currently awaiting her A-level results from Hartlepool Sixth Form College, is working as a care assistant over the summer to help elderly and vulnerable people.

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the teenager wanted to help her local community and is giving up her spare time to wash clothes and bedding, collect medical supplies and food, as well as offering other support and care.

Annie, who studied A-level English and sociology, said: “Becoming a key worker was something I wanted to do to help others in this unprecedented situation.

“It makes me feel good that I am helping others and that my spare time could be put to good use.

“I’ve found this experience very enlightening as prior to this job I had to complete a health and social care course in which I learned about how various conditions such as epilepsy, diabetes and mental health conditions and how they can impact a person and how each individual needs a person-centred

approach.”

In late March, the Government called for 250,000 volunteers in good health to help assist with the national effort to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

An incredible 170,000 people signed up overnight and the figure quickly rose to 405,000.

Hartlepool Sixth Form College will provide students with their A-level results following the government’s decision to cancel exams this year due to the outbreak.
