The North East coronavirus case rate has fallen during the second national lockdown but how does this compare to the rest of the country – here’s how the North East is doing.

England entered a new tier system on November 5 where the North East were placed under tier 3 but what is the North East case rate compared to the rest of the UK?

The allocation of tiers is based on five factors including each area's case numbers, the R number (reproduction rate of coronavirus), and the current and projected local pressure on the NHS.

The latest figures show 542 new cases of covid were recorded on Sunday, December 6 across the region.

Since November the number of new covid-19 cases across the North East has dropped by just under 50 per cent from 1,021 on November 19 to 570 on December 3 – just two weeks apart.

Based on government data the North East’s case rate per 100,000 population in the last seven days was 166.4 – this puts the region in the top three highest case rates across the nine regions in England.

Following the West Midlands is Yorkshire and The Humber with a case rate of 173.9 – the second highest case rate.

The region with the lowest case rate is the South West with a rate of only 85.8, the majority of the South West region is currently under tier 1 restrictions.

Case rates are based on the total number of people with at least one positive COVID-19 test result in the most recent 7-day period.

The rates per 100,000 resident population give a fairer comparison of the number of cases in each area as some regions are larger than others.
