Hartlepool’s new multi-million pound Highlight centre is set to usher in a new era for community health and physical activity.
The “state-of-the-art” active wellbeing hub at the marina waterfront is due to open on Monday, June 22, after a two-and-a-half year construction project.
Project leaders say it represents a “huge boost” to efforts to encourage more residents to get active and improve their physical and mental health and is set to be used for generations to come.
The building the site of the former Jacksons Landing shopping outlet is already said to be making its mark on the Hartlepool skyline.

It replaces the ageing Mill House Leisure Centre, which has now closed, and will combine a range of top swimming, fitness and family facilities with local NHS community care services.
Dan Garthwaite, head of service for Active & Creative Hartlepool, which will run the building, said: “We believe that we’ve got something for everyone.
“I’m really excited that we’re going to be opening our doors to members of the public next week.
“Over the last couple of weeks we’ve had a range of different people in from a testing perspective. The feedback has been really positive.

“They’ve commented on how pleasing it has been to get in and try out some of the facilities and activities, and we’re hopeful that customers will do the same.”
Visitors will soon be able to try out its impressive 25-metre eight-lane main pool, a 25-metre four-lane learner pool with movable floor, and a leisure pool complete with water play features and a race slide.
For fitness fans there is a 100-station gym equipped for all levels, alongside two interconnected fitness studios and a dedicated spinning studio.
And for young families there are active and soft play areas, plus a party room for special occasions.

Councillor Graham Harrison, the newly-appointed leader of Hartlepool Borough Council, added: “Highlight represents a huge investment in the health and wellbeing of our residents and we are incredibly proud to see this landmark facility ready to open its doors.
“It is a bold statement of our ambition for Hartlepool, bringing together world-class fitness facilities, family-friendly activities and vital health services under one roof, alongside extensive external space and on water facilities in the most unique setting.
“We have created a space that will support people to live healthier, happier lives for years to come. I have no doubt that Highlight will become a focal point for our community – a place where people of all ages can be active, connect and thrive.”
The flagship development was designed by award-winning architects GT3 alongside the council and constructed by leading contractor Wates.
It has been funded by the council, Tees Valley Combined Authority and Sport England.
People will also be able to access a range of NHS services from four dedicated consultation suites in a partnership with University Hospitals Tees.
Stacey Hunter, University Hospitals Tees chief executive, said: “By offering referral-based services in the heart of the community, we are ensuring our expertise is available where it’s needed most.
“People in Hartlepool value their local services and we’re proud to be strengthening our community offer even further.”
Highlight also offers spaces to relax and socialise, including a 100-seater café, ground and first-floor terraces and outdoor activity and events spaces.
