Back in Hartlepool, hundreds of people were scrambling for jobs in Graythorp and the town’s main hospital was unveiling its first 60 beds.
Another hospital was about to get a huge investment and a town centre pub opened for the first time.

About 500 jobs went on offer at Graythorp in 1972 and more than 700 would-be workers applied for them.
