Nine dramatic photographs show the effects that the Second World War had on Hartlepool.

And they include a picture of men sitting astride unexploded bombs in Elwick as well as the remains of a hotel bedroom after it took an almost direct hit.

This and a selection of other 1940s images can be shared thanks to the Hartlepool Museum Service and Hartlepool Library Service.

Also pictured is damage to the greyhound stadium, two boys stood next to a British plane which had been shot down, two men sat astride some unexploded bombs in Elwick, and the collapsed roof of a Hartlepool hospital.

Take a look at this reminder of the dark days of the Second World War.
