Northumberland's Warkworth Castle sets out reopening plans - here's what you need to know

The reopening of the historic Northumberland site, home to the Percy family, who wielded almost kingly power during the later middle ages, will give people the chance to visit the impressive medieval fortress once more.

As the Percys played an important role in the life of the court, the castle was the setting for historically significant events, including the conspiracy by the 1st Earl of Northumberland and his son, known as Harry Hotspur, to depose Henry IV.

Even after the castle later fell into decline, its fame lived on, with William Shakespeare using the setting for several scenes of his Henry IV plays.

New measures will be introduced by the charity to ensure the health and wellbeing of members, visitors, volunteers and staff, and those who visit can expect their day out to be a little different with social distancing in place.

To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, visitor numbers will be limited and all those planning to visit (including Members) will have to book in advance on the English Heritage website and arrive during their time slot. Only those with pre-booked tickets will be permitted entry, although once on site, visitors are welcome to stay as long as they like.

Warkworth Castle, which will reopen from Saturday, August 1, is among 40 of English Heritage’s historic sites to reopen in August. The charity - which cares for over 400 historic monuments, buildings and places - has been carrying out a phased reopening of staffed sites since June - including Whitby Abbey, Scarborough Castle and Clifford’s Tower. The vast majority of English Heritage’s sites will have now reopened.

We want to reassure our visitors that their wellbeing is paramount which is why we have put stringent social distancing measures in place as well as reinforcing our high hygiene standards.

"All our staff are excited to reopen and greet visitors this coming weekend, we can’t wait to share the stories of this incredible site once again.”
