70-strong Great North Run team for Hartlepool hospice

Almost 70 amateur athletes have pledged to compete in the world’s biggest half marathon to help the hospice provide top class care.

The team comprises a mix of runners using charity places that have been allocated to the hospice by race organisers alongside those who have sourced their own places.

Hospice fundraiser Greg Hildreth, who is taking part in the run on September 9, said: “This is one of our biggest annual fundraisers and it’s wonderful to see a mix of familiar faces and people new to the event coming forward to support patient care.

“We have got some fantastic groups and organisations backing us and it’s lovely to see how this event brings so many people together.

“It’s a big challenge and we are really grateful to all those who are working hard training and raising sponsorship.

“We’re really looking forward to another great day; it’s brilliant to have such a strong presence at one of the biggest running events in the world.”

The team will include runners from Hartlepool and Wynyard golf clubs, Hartlepool Rugby Club and Team Sally led by long term hospice supporter Phil Holbrook.

Lee Dodgson, who has previously completed the London Marathon, Great North Run, seven marathons in seven Days and running from Land’s End to John O’Groats for the hospice, is hoping to take part after overcoming a knee operation.

This year’s run also sees the return of John Hewitson, Academy Manager at Hartlepool United.

The hospice has received shirt sponsorship from Boots Opticians as well as support from Atom Gym at Wynyard.
