A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: "Police received a report at about 11.04am today that a Vauxhall Astra had veered off road and collided with a lorry parked in a lay by on the A19."

Police later confirmed the road had been reopened.

"The road is now reopened and traffic is moving freely again after a collision on the A19 just north of the A690 turn off. Thank you to everyone for their patience whilst emergency services worked to clear the road," the force said in a tweet.

Officers said no one was seriously injured in the incident.
