Appeal launched to track down 1960s Hartlepool engine driver

Douglas Wilde purchased a photo of a loco visiting Hartlepool decades ago, with the aim of passing it on to the engine driver pictured.

But, after Douglas left town in 1968, his plans were put on hold - until now.

“The picture was taken on a Saturday afternoon in May 1967, at Hartlepool depot - then numbered 51C Mainsforth Terrace,” he said.

“The loco had brought a West Riding special enthusiasts train to Middlesbrough, and came to Hartlepool for servicing.

“The depot closed in September 1967 and was demolished. The loco was withdrawn form service in the same month, and scrapped soon after.”

Douglas is now keen to track down Tommy, or his family, to pass the picture onto them.

“As a young Hartlepool train spotter back in 1967 I knew the depot was due to close,” said Douglas, who now lives in Staffordshire.

“I bought the print meaning to pass it on to Mr Wrigley - the occasion being so out of the ordinary as to be distinctly memorable.

“However, I left the town in 1968 and never did pass it on. Maybe the Hartlepool Mail can help finish the job for me.

“Hopefully Tommy is still with us, and the young fireman is certain to be. Hopefully the picture can be passed into the proper hands.
“I’m sure the original photographer won’t mind, after what, nearly 50 years!”
