Hartlepool Council’s recruitment drive is under way for this year’s beach lifeguards, to cover the beach at Seaton Carew as well as the Block Sands and Fish Sands on the Headland.

Three lifeguards and one lifeguard supervisor are needed to cover weekends, bank holidays and the half-term holiday during the initial period from Saturday, May 28, up to the start of the school summer holidays.

Then for the busier school summer holiday period itself – every day from Thursday, July 21 to Sunday, September 4 - 18 lifeguards and six lifeguard supervisors are required.

Lifeguards will be paid £9.52 per hour and lifeguard supervisors will receive £10.50.

Would-be lifeguards should hold a current National Beach Lifeguard Qualification or be working towards it.

Debbie Kershaw, the Council’s Quality and Safety Officer, said: “It takes a special type of person to be a lifeguard, and the role carries a lot of responsibility.

“You need to be a good swimmer, alert and observant, and a good communicator who can keep a cool head in an emergency.

“We welcome applications from both new candidates and from lifeguards who have worked for us in previous years.”

Application forms and further details are available from the Council’s Human Resources Section on 01429 523331 or by e-mail at [email protected] or on the internet at www.northeastjobs.org.uk
