Bad defeat at Everton leaves Newcastle keeper gutted

Rob Elliot admitted he got no satisfaction from his own performance between the posts at Goodison Park.

Newcastle United were beaten 3-0 by Everton on Wednesday night.

Elliot kept Steve McClaren’s woeful side in the game until the 88th minute, when the visitors, trailing to a first-half Aaron Lennon goal, conceded the first of two late penalties.

The goalkeeper, outstanding in the absence of No 1 Tim Krul in recent months, made a series of saves to deny Roberto Martinez’s rampant side.

But the 29-year-old left the stadium dejected.

“Obviously, it’s good to make saves and help the team out, but ideally you want it to be for a win,” said Elliot.

“It doesn’t really count as much when you go off and haven’t really got the result you want. Hopefully, I can make less saves and we can get more points going forward.”

Newcastle remain 18th in the Premier League and two points adrift of safety ahead of Saturday’s home game against West Bromwich Albion.

And head coach McClaren has demanded a “reaction” from his team.

Asked what went wrong against Everton, Elliot said: “In the first half they started well and we didn’t quite match them.

“Then, once a team like that gets a goal, you become more open and leave yourself more exposed on the counter.

“I think it’s the start that killed us really. We’ve started games really well recently, and that was the most disappointing thing.

“Once you give thar one goal, you’re just trying to chase it and, with their quality and pace on the counter, it becomes more and more difficult.

“Second half we were a lot better, we pushed and pushed, but they still created chances. We deserved what we got.”
