Beatles fan Luke George on-song as Hartlepool United Come Together at Torquay

When he picked Come Together as his Friday night song to ‘entertain’ Hartlepool United’s squad, did he see what was coming on Saturday at Torquay?

Apparently not, but given he’s a Scouser with George in his name, he couldn’t belt out anything but a hit from the Fab Four and, of course, famous sons of Liverpool.

When a Pools player makes his debut, the Friday night ritual at the team hotel involves the ‘new boy’ performing and George delivered that Beatles number in ther Exeter HQ.

And little did he know how the team would need to come together less than 24 hours later.

A final scoreline of 2-0 has the look of something of a formality, a walk in the park, but those who witnessed this chalk’n’cheese afternoon at Plainmoor will confirm that it was anything but.

While credit is due to the Gulls for the way they attacked Pools in a goalless first half, the away display was dredging the depths.

But how things changed after the break when goals by Rhys Oates and Jonathan Franks (who else?) took Pools to their fourth away win in the National League and to within one point of the top seven.

“I got up and had a go at Come Together’ and it was all right!” smiled George, who was then on-song in the centre of the park and hailed the team’s effort.

“It might not have been the prettiest of games – we’ve had to grind it out in the first half.

“You’ll get a lot of that in this league, the main thing is we’ve got three points and we’re closer to our goal of getting in the play-off positions.

“That shows good character in the dressing room and character in the group.

“Obviously when we got in at half-time that we hadn’t been good enough in possession.

“The plus point was we did soak up all that pressure and we did grind it out.

“When you go away in this league that’s what you have to do.

“We’ve come out and played better in the second half and got the goals I think we deserved.

“I’m over the moon to have got a win on my full debut, but the main thing was us winning the three points and now we can look to kick on.”

It was a magnificent team effort on the pitch and there was some terrific support from the terrace and the seats.

A grand total of 159 fans made the trek to the English Riviera and they made plenty of noise and, on the subject of singing, there was a belting rendition of Two Little Boys, a club anthem.

“We’ve come a long way and got the win so I’m delighted,” added George, who was forced to watch the first 11 weeks of the season from the sidelines.

“Massive credit to the fans – it’s a helluva journey and they were probably frustrated in the first half, but we’re made up to have sent them home happy.”

George performed well in the centre of midfield alongside Nicky Featherstone and Michael Woods.

Remarkably, the 25-year-old got through the entire game – his first 90 minutes since Chester’s 5-2 defeat at Sutton in late April.

“With your first full game, the adrenaline and excitement keeps you going,” he told SportMail.

“And if a breather was needed I had the likes of Nicky Featherstone and Michael Woods in there with me!”
