Boy injured during police car chase in Hartlepool

A nine-year-old boy was hit by a car during a police chase through the town.

Officers are appealing for information following the incident which happened last night.

The youngster was hit by the car as he crossed the road with his mother.

Luckily, the youngster suffered only minor bruising to his elbow and did not require any medical treatment.

Officers said a short pursuit started when a green Peugeot 307 failed to stop for police on Grainger Street at around 9.35pm.

The vehicle was pursued along York Road, Raby Road, Hart Lane, Murray Street, Sandringham Road, Topcliffe Street and Zetland Road.

The Peugeot is believed to have hit the boy at the junctions of Raby Road and Perth Street.

The vehicle also caused damage to the wall of a property and two other vehicles on Weldeck Road, before finally coming to a stop after becoming wedged in between a wall and a car on Zetland Road.

The 35-year-old male driver was arrested on suspicion of driving whilst disqualified, driving without insurance, failing to stop for police, dangerous driving, driving whilst unfit through drugs and possession of an offensive weapon in a public place and is currently in custody.

Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to contact Acting Sergeant Andrew Lawson from the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit on the non-emergency number 101, quoting event number 065482.
