The A689 Belle Vue Way is still closed in both direction between the Stag and Monkey pub and Burn Road roundabout.

Hartlepool Water are hoping to open a lane in both directions, however, if this is possible it will not happen until this evening.

It is thought work to replace the damaged pipe will take several days.

Mainsforth Terrace has since been re-opened but motorists are asked to take care.

Emma Staples, from Hartlepool Water, said: “Our teams are working hard to get things back to normal for our customers in Hartlepool.

“Our specialist contractors are visiting those customers whose homes were flooded as a result of the burst main, and we well pick up the bill for any work needed to get them back on their feet.

“The A689 will be partially reopened as soon as it’s safe to do so. One lane on each carriageway will need to remain closed to allow our engineering teams to carry out the pipe repairs, but we appreciate this a main route into town so we’re doing everything we can to reduce our working area, get one lane open and ease traffic disruption as soon as possible.

“We’d like to thank customers for their patience and understanding, as well as the council and highways divisions for their support. We know how distressing and disruptive something like this can be, and we are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.

“This will remain our top priority and we are continuing to pull out all the stops to get things back to normal and reopen the road as quickly as possible.

“Regular updates will be provided on www.hartlepoolwater.co.uk and via Facebook.
